Helicopter Rides at the Wisconsin State Fair

Good Times Helicopters offers helicopter rides every year at the Wisconsin State Fair in West Allis (suburb of Milwaukee), Wisconsin. They are not a Wisconsin company, but are based out of Naples, Florida and tour the eastern United States every summer.

Rides cost $20 (worth EVERY penny) and last three to four minutes as the helicopter makes a large circle around the fair grounds. There is one seat in front to the left of the pilot and a three-across bench seat behind the pilot. Some times they'll fly with one of the side doors off. If you're lucky enough to catch one of these times, request to sit on the bench seat on the side that has no door (usually the right side). It really adds to the experience.

I went on many helicopter rides at the Wisconsin State Fair but only took my camera on two of them (one day-time ride and one night-time ride). Here are some of my photos from those rides. Night shots are a little blurry due to low shutter speeds in combination with the movement of the helicopter. There is also some "smearing" of bright lights due to the plexi-glass windows.

NOTE:  If you plan to take pictures during a night-time ride over the State Fair, do NOT use a camera that has a built-in flash. Using a flash would mess up the pilot's night vision. Use a flash-less camera with "fast" film (ASA 1000 recommended due to the low light conditions and movement of the helicopter) instead.
